- Definition : A consonant sound which can be made for an extended period of time (until the speaker runs out of breath) as the airflow passes continuously out of the mouth.
- Examples : All fricatives (eg /s/ /f/ and /ʃ/) are continuants, as are nasals (/m/, /n/ and /ŋ/) and approximants (/l/, /r/ and /w/).
