  • Definition : two words which have the same written form but differ in meaning and pronunciation. 
  • Examples :  close   /kləʊz/ ( = shut)   and  close  /kləʊs/ (= near);  row /rəʊ/ (= things arranged in a line)  and  row  /raʊ/ (= an argument)
