An ELT Glossary : Describe and Draw

Describe and Draw is an information gap activity used in the Communicative Approach, and first popularised by Geddes and Sturtridge in the late 1970s.

One student has a picture which their partner can't see. The student with the picture describes it, and the other has to draw it.

Depending on what is included in the picture, the activity can be used to recycle specific vocabulary, or to practise areas like prepositions of place or the present continuous. For example, to mpractice prepositions of place the picture might be of a room with nvarious objects in different positions. The student describing the picture would therefore be saying things like : There's a book on the sofa; There's a cat under the table etc.
